On Northeast 12th Street near downtown Bellevue, a pedestrian was crushed and killed by a street sweeper on the morning of Monday, February 19th. The accident happened near the intersection of 120th Avenue Northeast.
At approximately 11:15 a.m., Bellevue firefighters were on the scene working to remove the deceased body of a 44-year-old man from underneath the street sweeper. The operator of the sweeper truck was not found to be impaired in any way. Working in a construction zone of an apartment complex, the operator was backing the vehicle up in a closed lane at the time of the incident.
The victim was publicly identified the following day, and the King County Medical Examiner revealed that the cause of death were injuries to the head and chest. It was determined that the victim was kneeling down near the street sweeper when he was struck, and the sweeper truck was backing up. The truck was being driven by a construction worker from a nearby construction site.
If you or someone you know has been injured, or even killed, while commuting as a pedestrian, contact an attorney who is familiar with pedestrian laws. He or she can assist you in proving fault, as well as determining what types of compensation you may be eligible for. Pedestrian injuries can run the gamut from a knockdown resulting in scratches and bruises to an incident such as this one resulting in catastrophic injuries. Regardless of the situation, contacting an attorney as soon as possible following such an incident is the best course of action.
