Drunk drivers put all of our lives in danger

| Jun 5, 2020 | Car Accidents |

The chances that a motorist will become involved in an auto accident increase during peak driving times. Crashes are most common on or around holidays and during morning or evening rush hour. Inclement weather also elevates the potential for auto collisions due to there being less-than-optimal driving conditions. These factors are small when compared to the devastation that drunk drivers cause, though. They are a menace to highway and traffic safety for many.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows that 36 people, on average, die in an alcohol-related automobile accident every day. The federal agency’s data shows that that number jumps to 45 people per day during Christmas time and 54 daily deaths around New Year’s eve and day.

Most individuals envision that driving conditions would improve during the summer months because there are longer days, clearer skies and no snow. That’s not the case, though. The number of alcohol-related deaths is highest during the summer compared to any other time of the year. Federal regulators point out that the reason for the uptick in crashes during the summer is there’s an increase in the number of impaired drivers on the road then.

Unskilled teenage drivers flood the streets during the summer when they’re out of school. They often engage in distracted driving, reckless driving and underage drinking. Transportation officials refer to the summer as the “100 Deadliest Days for Teens” because there are so many of them on the road at this time of the year.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) data reveals that 5.8% of teens between the ages of 16 and 17 drive while under the influence of alcohol. Another 15.1% of those between the ages of 18 and 20 do the same. The federal agency’s statistics show that more than 3,100 teenagers lose their lives in automobile crashes every year, with at least 66% of those being males.

Our bodies are quite resilient. Many people walk away from their Bellevue car crashes unscathed because of this. Washington drunk driving accident victims aren’t always as lucky, though. Many factors cause these types of crashes and leave behind a more significant path of destruction. If you’ve suffered serious injuries in a collision, then you need to focus on getting better. An attorney will handle the insurance company for you.
