Pedestrian and traffic safety addressed by Bellevue City Council

On Behalf of | Dec 22, 2020 | Pedestrian Accidents |

Whether it is a beautiful summer day or right after a nice blanket of snow has fallen, residents in Washington State and elsewhere often enjoy taking a walk to enjoy the outdoors. However, cold or hot, on city streets or in residential areas, pedestrians are faced with dangers of all kinds. Year-round, pedestrian accidents are an issue; making it imperative that pedestrian safety is addressed in the state of Washington.

Traffic injuries and deaths

In Bellevue, the rate of pedestrian and traffic injuries and deaths is concerning. So much, in fact, that the City Council recently took steps to improve this. Last year, the city recorded 25 traffic injuries and five deaths. So far this year, the city has experienced 10 crash victims with serious injuries and four with fatal injuries.

While budget cuts related to the pandemic have made the matter challenging, the rate of injuries and deaths in the city has caused the need to make road safety improvements and urgent issue. As a result, the Bellevue City Council approved an amended budget that would allow for an accelerated street safety project to begin next year.

Improved street safety

The project will have a focus on safety concerning pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Bicycle lanes will be constructed, and some safety projects will specifically target areas where fatal and serious injuries have repeatedly occurred or are more likely to occur. Other safety features include signs that tell motorists how fast they are traveling, pedestrian crossings and other safety features. While this funding was expected to be spent over the course of five years, it was asserted that they will move much faster, as it is important to address this issue now, even when the city is struggling with its budget.

An accident, whether a pedestrian, bicycle or motor vehicle crash, can be a life changing event. When a victim suffers serious injuries because of a negligent motorist or the city’s failure to provide safe roadways, it is possible to take actions. A personal injury action could help accident victims not only old the party at fault accountable for he accident but also aid them in the recovery of compensation for damages such as medical bills, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, lost wages and other losses.
